About

Nari Maitree has been implementing ‘Improving the Lives of Urban Extreme Poor (ILUEP) Project’ in 09 Wards of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC). The targeted participants of the project are pavement, squatter and slum dwellers in total 31 areas in these 09 Wards. Nari Maitree has been working for enhancement of 2000 urban extreme poor’s livelihood through increasing their income and financial asset by providing skill training and small-medium grants. Reducing malnutrition rate among under 05 children’s and increased access to better health and nutrition service. Gender equality, prevention of Gender & home based violence, women & girl’s empowerment, decision making, reducing incidence of violence against women and girl’s Better access to basic social services and their rights, also building leadership through different awareness session. Through advocacy introducing them with civil society alliance, local govt. NGO’s, local service providers and other stakeholders. Improved access to water, sanitation, hygiene and awareness on HIV/AIDS transmission.

Nari Maitree has been providing support and services around 166 targeted underprivileged children in two Day Care Centre at Paltan and Hazaribagh area. 65 underprivileged children are getting direct day care facilities; 30 in Paltan PDC and 35 in Hazaribagh community day care centre, and another 101 children getting formal school education and nutrition food facilities. In total Nari Maitree has been supporting 404 underprivileged children’s. With day care facilities, learning & play materials, nutrient food, cloths, basic health care services to the children’s for their physical and intellectual development.

Slums: Cumilla slum, Riazbag, sipahibag, Notun bag, Notun Rasta, Moulovirtek, Aftab nagar,  Hazaribag Balur Math, Jhawchar, Lalbag Master bari, Nimtoly.

Improving the Lives of Urban Extreme Poor (ILUEP) Project

Project Goal

The overall goal of ILUEP is to improve the livelihood security and increase the resilience to shocks of the targeted urban extreme poor households living in undeveloped slums, squatter settlements and on pavements in Dhaka and Chittagong.

Outcome of the Project:

Outcome 1: Urban extreme poor households increase their income and other financial assets

Outcome 2: Malnutrition rates among children under 5 reduced among extreme poor households living in pavement, squatter and undeveloped slum dwellings

Outcome 3: Attitude and behavior change is accepting of gender equality, woman & girl’s empowerment and women’s control over decision making and resource use within the family

Outcome 4: Extreme poor living in undeveloped slum, squatter and pavement dwellings have access to basic social services and their rights

Outcome 5: Urban extreme poor households (pavement, squatter & slums) have improved access to water and sanitation facilities, improved hygiene practices and increased awareness on HIV/AIDS transmission

Outcome 6: Women and girls from urban extreme poor households (pavement, squatter & slums) experience reduced incidence of Violence against Woman and Girls

Cross Cutting Activity: Fundraising and Local Resource Mobilization works as a cross cutting issue in this project. This will create capability among the urban extreme poor to help themselves and seek support from local, individual, corporate, sector. Every year a certain amount of fund raise to provide more support to underprivileged children’s ECD & Formal education, nutrition, health and to urban extreme poor households.

Total pavement dwellers reached in Dhaka city : 20362 (Men- 10702 , Women-9660)

Total reached Dhaka -17314 ( men- 8980 , Women-8334)

Existing Dhaka -11824 ( Adult men -3028 ,Adult women – 3521, Children (boys) – 3039 , Children (girls)- 2236

Gender wise male and female – male -51%, female- 49%

Our existing target people in Paltan center – 1400 Anandabazar centre – 1500 Total 29,000 participants.

Advocacy

  • Yearly Sharing Meeting with GOB representatives, community leaders and law enforcing agencies on protection issue: NM will organize yearly sharing meeting with GOB representatives, employers, community leaders and law enforcing agencies, school, management committees existing laws in favor of human rights, local resource mobilization and abusive behavior with street people.
  • Networking with different Organization:The project will facilitate the street people to establish linkages with different Net Work Organization like Network for Establishing Rights for the street people, ensuring there health service, education mainstreaming, involving them with the income generating activities and also for the job placement.
  • Day observation:International Women’s Day in 8 March, International Human Rights Day in 10th December
  • International child rights week in the month of September organized human chain and rally for establishing their voice and Citizen right of pavement dwellers are recognized and addressed by the relevant government agencies.
  • Pavement and Squatter dwellers’ Citizen Rights and entitlements are recognized and realized :Advocacy with City Corporation/Ministry of Local Government and national policy makers to develop policy to recognize and support pavement and squatter dwellers and implementation of policy through effective programmes (macro and meso level) with providing them birth certificates, national ID card etc.
